Visa or admissions refusal: the 48-hour playbook

First: breathe, then read slowly

A refusal letter is a technical document, not a personal judgment. Read it twice. Underline every phrase that references a regulation (e.g. "s.91(6) Immigration Rules" for UK, or "214(b)" for US).

UK Tier 4 / Student Route common codes

• Refused under paragraph 245ZV(d) — insufficient funds, usually the 28-day rule tripped.
• Refused under paragraph 320(7A) — false or misleading information. Serious — affects future applications.
• Refused under paragraph 245ZV(b) — CAS issue, usually course/sponsor concerns.

US 214(b) refusals

214(b) is the catch-all for "insufficient evidence of non-immigrant intent." It's not a ban. You can reapply, but only if something materially changed — new job, new property, new family ties, new funding. Reapplying with the same story in the same week = same outcome.

Canadian study permit refusals

Read the GCMS notes (order them via Access to Information). The one-line refusal letter hides 2–3 pages of officer notes. 80% of the time it's "purpose of visit" or "financial capacity." Now you know exactly what to fix.

What to do in the next 48 hours

1. Don't reapply yet. Most refused applicants reapply within a week. Most are refused again.
2. Document what changed — finances, job, academic plan, study gap.
3. Get a second read of your original application. Patterns you missed will jump out.
4. Decide: same stream or different one? Sometimes switching from SDS → regular or Tier 4 → Graduate visa is the answer.
