You don't need IELTS for the UK: the WAEC acceptance list for 2026

The rule most Nigerian applicants still miss

If you sat WAEC (WASSCE) in Nigeria, your English Language C6 or better is widely accepted as proof of English proficiency at UK and Canadian universities — no IELTS required. It's written into admissions policy at most institutions under the label "Medium of Instruction (MOI)" or "recognised English-language qualification".

This one fact saves Nigerian applicants about ₦150,000–₦220,000 (the IELTS fee + resit insurance) and 6–8 weeks of prep time per cohort. Yet most applicants still pay for the test because consultancies don't check.

Below is the 2026 working list of institutions we've verified accept WAEC English in lieu of IELTS — plus what to do if your target university isn't on it.

United Kingdom — WAEC-accepting universities (verified 2026)

Russell Group and equivalents:

The sentence that works:

"I completed my Nigerian WASSCE (West African Senior School Certificate Examination) in [year], scoring C6 in English Language. This qualifies under your Medium of Instruction / English Proficiency policy as per [institution's] published admissions criteria. My WAEC result is attached."

Most admissions teams will confirm waiver within 7–10 working days.

Canada — WAEC-accepting DLIs (verified 2026)

Canada is more granular — each Designated Learning Institution has its own English policy, but WAEC is widely accepted at college level and increasingly at university level. Verified 2026:

Critical caveat for SDS (Student Direct Stream):

The SDS (Student Direct Stream) programme does NOT accept WAEC as English proof — SDS requires IELTS Academic 6.0 each band (or CELPIP 7 / TEF B2 / PTE 60). If you want the 20-business-day SDS lane, you still need IELTS.

But if you apply via the regular stream with WAEC English as your proof, the timeline is longer (8–14 weeks) but you skip IELTS entirely. Many Nigerian graduates choose this route when time isn't critical.

Ireland — where it gets complicated

Most Irish universities technically allow WAEC English under MOI policy, but visa officers at the Irish embassy in Abuja increasingly push back on WAEC-only English evidence for the Type D study visa. We recommend IELTS Academic 6.5 for Ireland applications — the admissions waiver is real, but the visa-stage scrutiny isn't worth the risk.

When to still take IELTS even if not required

You're aiming for Russell Group top-10 (LSE, Imperial, Oxford, Cambridge) — they don't accept WAEC.
You want to use SDS for Canada (faster processing).
You're applying to Ireland (Abuja embassy scrutiny).
You want to keep the UK Graduate Route / Skilled Worker visa options open at year 2 — some sponsored employers still ask for IELTS 7.0 for skilled roles.
Your WAEC English is lower than C6 — C6 is the minimum almost universally.

Realistic 4-week action plan if WAEC is your English proof

Week 1 — Request official WAEC result printout with scratch card. Cost: ₦2,000. Turnaround: 1–2 days online.

Week 2 — For each university on your shortlist, email admissions directly:

"I hold a WASSCE with English Language grade C6. Can this satisfy your English proficiency requirement in lieu of IELTS? I've attached my result slip."

Week 3 — Collate confirmation emails. Include screenshots on your application as supporting evidence.

Week 4 — Submit applications with the confirmation email from admissions as Exhibit A. Mention the waiver explicitly in your application cover letter.

What doesn't work

Submitting WAEC English grades of C7 or below — the cutoff is C6 at nearly every institution.
Expecting a WASSCE waiver to extend to visa processing — check SDS and Ireland caveats above.
Using WAEC from countries other than Nigeria, Ghana, Gambia, Sierra Leone, Liberia — the WASSCE is West African, but some universities only accept Nigerian WAEC.
Submitting a statement of result instead of the certified WAEC certificate — universities want the certified document.

Bottom line

If you have C6 or better in WAEC English, you can almost certainly skip IELTS for the UK and most Canadian colleges — saving ~₦200k and 6 weeks of prep. But confirm with each specific university admissions office in writing before committing your application strategy. Don't let anyone sell you an IELTS course you don't need.
