Who qualifies
- You completed an eligible UK course (degree-level or higher) at a Track Record Provider institution
- You were on a Student visa throughout the course
- You haven't previously held a Doctorate Extension Scheme visa
- You apply before your Student visa expires (ideally within 60 days of course completion)
That's it. There's no salary threshold, no job offer required, no sector restriction. You can work for any employer — including self-employment — or launch a business.

Move 2 — Target Skilled Worker-eligible roles from day one. A 2-year Graduate Route is a bridge — but only if what's on the other side is sponsored employment. Prioritise roles where the employer can plausibly sponsor you after 18 months.
Move 3 — Accumulate the "Continuous Residence" calendar. UK permanent residency (ILR) after 5 years requires continuous lawful residence. Graduate Route time counts. Use it to start the 5-year clock the day you land, not a year later.
What the Graduate Route does NOT allow
- Family dependants: You can't bring a spouse or child on a Graduate Route visa as of the 2024 reform. If you need to bring family, stay on Student visa or move to Skilled Worker earlier.
- Extending itself: You get 2 years (or 3 for PhD). No extensions. After that it's Skilled Worker, Innovator Founder, or another route.
- NHS employment in some roles: Doctors and dentists on the Foundation Programme have specific route restrictions — check GMC guidance.
